Texas High School Baseball Champions Kicked Out Of Playoffs Just Days Before Semifinals After Violation

Texas High School Baseball Scandal Forfeit Playoffs Centerville Eligibility Ineligible

Centerville was just four wins away from its second-straight high school baseball championship in the state of Texas. It is now removed from the playoffs all together.

This sudden forfeiture stems from the use of an ineligible player.

There seems to be a recurring eligibility issue with high school baseball in the Lone Star State. How are these violations not discovered prior to this point in the season? Is there a whistleblower?

Centerville was kicked out of the high school baseball playoffs.

Centerville High School is about as small as it gets. Located about 80 miles from Waco and 115 miles from Houston, it enrolls less than 200 students in Grades 9-12.

The Tigers compete in the Region III district of Division 2A high school baseball under UIL jurisdiction. They are the reigning 2A state champions. They were on right track for a return to the title game in 2026.

Centerville finished the regular season at 15-6-1 with a district record of 9-1. It rolled through the first round of the postseason with a two-game sweep of Mt. Enterprise in the bi-district championship. It won both games by a combined score of 29-4 to advance to the area championship against Shelbyville.

Here is where things get interesting.

The Tigers actually lost to the Dragons in the first game of a three-game series but they bounced right back in game two to force a rubber match and won game three by exactly one run. They won the series 2-1 to advance to the regional semifinals.

However, the result has since been overturned. The bracket has changed. Shelbyville will advance to play Harleton. Centerville’s season is now over.

Eligibility issues strike Texas, again.

The Tigers were supposed to play in the regional semifinal on Saturday. They were notified of a potential violation on Monday by the University Interscholastic League, the governing body of Texas high school sports. Allegations involved a player’s eligibility status. The notice sparked an investigation.

The Centerville Independent School District conducted an internal investigation alongside the UIL and all of the other involved parties throughout the week. It ultimately found that a violation had occurred but it was not the fault of the coaching staff.

“An internal review confirmed they followed all established protocols, including the residency verification process required by the district.”

The district will be more careful moving forward.

“Centerville ISD is committed to conducting a comprehensive review of all eligibility procedures and documentation practices. The district will implement additional safeguards and move through verification measures related to the Previous Athletic Participation Form (PAPF) and other eligibility requirements to strengthen compliance efforts, protect the interests of student-athletes, and help prevent similar situations in the future.”

As a result of the self-reported violation, the Tigers accepted the forfeiture of all impacted contests and the remainder of their season. They are kicked out of the playoffs.

With Centerville out, Shelbyville is back in. The Dragons will now advance to the regional semifinals despite their loss to the Tigers in the three-game series last weekend.

Interestingly enough, this is the second time this season where a reigning state champion was removed from the postseason due to an undiscovered eligibility issue. Grapevine suffered a similar fate.
