The Texas Tech Red Raiders spent big money on former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby out of the transfer portal. But now it appears they’ll be without the star QB for the foreseeable future.
The Red Raiders stunned the college football world on Monday when they announced Sorsby was stepping away from the program to enter a residential treatment program for gambling. ESPN’s Pete Thamel then reported that the NCAA is investigating Sorsby over thousands of dollars worth of bets on a gambling app.
Texas Tech says there is currently no timetable for Sorsby to return to the program.

“Texas Tech is committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being,” it continued.
“We love Brendan and support his decision to seek professional help,” Texas Tech football coach Joey McGuire said in the statement. “Taking this step requires courage, and our primary focus is on him as a person. Our program is behind Brendan as he prioritizes his health.”
Sorsby himself did not issue a statement.
The second-team All-Big 12 selection threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions for the Bearcats a year ago, while adding 580 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on the ground.
He chose the Red Raiders over several competitors, with the LSU Tigers being the most widely reported runner-up for his services. Texas Tech reportedly offered Sorsby an NIL deal worth up to $5 million.
