On Sunday, Barcelona — the reigning La Liga champions — got their 2023-24 campaign off the ground as they took home their first win of the season thanks to a 2-0 victory over Cadiz.

And while the nature of the win — Barca scored two goals in the final 18 minutes of the match to seal the victory — was certainly worthy of headlines, perhaps more notable is the fact that they started 16-year-old Lamine Yamal in the match, making him the youngest La Liga starter of the century.

Lamal played for 85 minutes before being subbed off for Ferran Torres. In Barca’s first match of the season, a 0-0 draw against Getafe, Yamal came off the bench for Oriol Romeu in the 76th minute.

“I think he’s so mature and can already make the difference for us. We have to take care of him, but I think he’s ready and I’m not afraid to trust youth,” Barca legend and current head coach Xavi said about Lamal after his performance against Cadiz.

Yamal, who was born in Spain in the year 2007, started on the right of a midfield four in the match. Given how young Lamine Yamal is, we thought it’d be helpful to put together a list of things that are actually older than he is.

Comparatively, when the legendary Lionel Messi — who went on to become the greatest soccer player of all time — made his competitive debut for Barcelona in 2004, he was 17 years old.

Lamal and the rest of the Barcelona squad will next be in action when they take on Villareal in La Liga play on Sunday, August 27.
