You don’t become one of the most legendary golfers of all time by sitting on your couch, and it’s no secret Tiger Woods put in an insane amount of work to reach that point—which includes a routine that’s intense enough to make you tired just by reading about it.

It’s not hyperbolic to say Tiger Woods has been playing golf since he was old enough to walk. He was just two years old when he was positioned as a prodigy during the first television appearance of his career in 1978, and he more than lived up to that label thanks to what transpired in the decades that followed.

While Tiger has firmly entered the twilight of his career, if history has taught us anything, it’s that we shouldn’t rule out the possibility he’ll win more than the 15 majors he’s already racked up or surpass Sam Snead for the most victories ever recorded on the PGA Tour (they’re currently tied at 82).

It’s obviously cliché to say hard work and a fierce dedication to your craft are vital to success as a professional athlete, but a borderline unhealthy obsession with golf has served as the foundation of Tiger’s iconic career.

If Woods gives you a piece of advice about how to improve your game, it’s probably in your best interest to listen, and a number of college golfers got the chance to take advantage of his wisdom when he dropped in to surprise them at a recent promotional shoot that was organized by Bridgestone.

While addressing the players, Tiger dropped a piece of knowledge concerning the routine he harnesses while gearing up for an event, which involves taking a minimum of 1,000 shots on a daily basis.

It’s worth noting “shots” aren’t necessarily the same thing as “swings,” as he elaborated on the approach, saying:

“I make sure that each and every day I have 1,000 contacts with a club.

That doesn’t mean hitting a thousand balls on a range. That means possibly hitting 100 on a range, 300 chip shops, 600 putts.

You break it up however you want to break it up. That develops feel and sensation that never goes away.”

It might sound like a lot, but it’s certainly worked out pretty well for him.
