There was a time, not all that long ago, that Tim Tebow was the most talked about man in American sports.

Tebow, to his credit, was undeniably one of the greatest college football players of all-time.

A two-time national champion, Heisman Trophy winner, and part-time motivational speaker, Tebow’s time with the Florida Gators was nothing short of remarkable.

But that’s where they fun sort of stopped.

For as good a college football player as Tebow was, he had a fatal flaw as an NFL quarterback. It turns out he couldn’t pass. The Denver Broncos gambled on teaching him how to do so and still selected him No. 25 overall in the 2010 NFL Draft.

That decision didn’t look too bad when he helped the Broncos past the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2011 AFC Wild Card round.

But it was all downhill for there. Tebow and the Broncos got throttled, 45-10, by the New England Patriots the following week. He was traded to the New York Jets in the offseason and started just two games in 2012.

Those were the last two games he’d start in his career, bouncing around practice squads for the next three seasons.

Tebow then went to try his hand at baseball. He played 287 games across five levels in the minor leagues. But he hit just .223 for his career and never sniffed the majors.

The former superstar made one last-gasp attempt at an NFL career in 2021. Urban Meyer signed him as a tight end to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. But he lasted just three months before being released.

Now Tebow is trying another sport: hockey. But not in the way you’d think.

Greg Wyshynski of ESPN reports Tebow is now the co-owner of an expansion team in the ECHL. The ECHL is the third tier of the US hockey system below the NHL and AHL.

“I love that sports can bring people together from all over to enjoy camaraderie, competition, and community impact,” Tebow said in a statement. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of a group bringing hockey to the Tahoe area for fans and families to create memories for years to come.”

Tim Tebow is officially back. Just, uh, not in the way we all expected. Bonus points to the first player to hit a Tebowing celly again him, though.
