Trea Turner and the Philadelphia Phillies made huge news yesterday when he defending National League Champions signed the All-Star shortstop to an 11-year contract worth $300 million.

The move was a huge one for the Phillies as it added another star to a lineup that was already able to make it to a World Series and take a couple of games off of a Houston Astros team that had swept their way through the American League,

The move was also a big deal because it weakened another NL contender as Turner was previously a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were one of the favorites to win it all last season.

Now it turns out that the Phillies also beat out another contender to sign Turner.

According to a report from MLB insider Jon Heyman, the San Diego Padres actually made a much larger offer to Turner, but he chose the Phillies anyway.

The rest of Major League Baseball should be pretty happy about this decision from Turner. The Padres roster is already going to be loaded next season after they landed Juan Soto at the trade deadline. Next season they’ll have Soto, Manny Machado, and Fernando Tatis Jr together for the first time when Tatis Jr returns from his suspension.

Adding Turner to that group would have been a scary idea for the rest of the league.

Instead, Turner will take his .298 batting average, 21 home runs, and 100 RBIs from last season and join up with a strong Philadelphia Phillies roster as they try to return to the World Series.

He’ll just be doing it for over $40 million dollars less than he would have if he had chosen to play for the San Diego Padres.
