Despite being just 22 years old and a former #3 overall NFL Draft pick who has only started four games in the National Football League, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance could already be in search of a new home.
In recent weeks, there have been a handful of reports regarding the Niners exploring a potential deal for Lance, who is reportedly behind Brock Purdy on the team’s QB depth chart.
Not only did “multiple” teams reportedly inquire about the availability of Lance, but the Vikings have been specifically mentioned as a team who have spoken with San Francisco about a potential deal.
Naturally, given how little Lance has actually gotten to play for the 49ers, the 22-year-old North Dakota State University product understandably doesn’t sound all too thrilled about the recent reports regarding his future with the team.
“I got no comment on that,” Lance told inforum.com. “I have no information.”
Prior to the 2022 season, Lance was given the keys to the 49ers’ offense over former starter Jimmy Garoppolo but he struggled mightily in his two starts before going down with a season-ending ankle injury against the Seattle Seahawks during the second week of the season.
During the Niners’ Week 1 loss to the Chicago Bears — the league’s worst team last season — Lance completed just 13 of 28 passes for 164 yards and an interception, while also rushing 13 times for 54 yards. Then, the following week, Lance completed attempted just three passes before he was knocked out of the game and subsequently the entire season.
Given that second-year quarterback Brock Purdy is still recovering from a torn UCL in his elbow if the Niners do deal Lance, they’ll likely only do so if they get a starting-caliber signal-caller in return, which is why a deal with the Vikings for Kirk Cousins could make sense.
