A meaningless half-court shot at the end of a college basketball matchup between UCONN and Villanova resulted in a terribly bad beat for Husky backers.

While the impressive shot wouldn’t matter in terms of the final outcome, it did allow the Wildcats to cover a -3.5-point spread.

The Big East rivals battled in a close contest Saturday as Villanova looked to knock off top-ranked Connecticut. They wouldn’t get off to a great start as the Huskies jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead.

Nova battled back, cutting that lead to five by halftime before going ahead in the second half.

UCONN would overcome that deficit late, eventually forcing the Wildcats to foul. Free throws allowed the Huskies to extend the lead to four points on their final possession, slightly covering the -3.5-point spread.

Mark Armstrong would soon ruin Connecticut bettors’ days.

Dribbling the basketball up the floor, the guard heaved a shot from half-court. The Hail Mary went through the net just as the final second ticked from the clock, giving UCONN backers a terribly bad beat.

The three-pointer helped close the Villanova deficit to 66-65, but it wouldn’t give them a win as their upset bid fell just short.

UCONN will likely hold onto the No. 1 spot for another week after squeaking out a win. Villanova, meanwhile, fell to 11-7 on the season.
