On Saturday, the South Lawn of the White House will serve as the site of the event that’s been dubbed “UFC Freedom 250.” The “Octagon Girls” who will be working those fights will don some patriotic outfits designed for the occasion, and they’ll be violating the U.S. Flag Code in the process.

It’s been close to a year since Donald Trump announced the White House was gearing up to host a UFC event in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. That revelation was met with some skepticism, but it became increasingly clear that spectacle was actually in the works in the months that followed.

The event was originally slated to go down on the Fourth of July, but it was moved to June 14th (which just so happens to coincide with the president’s 80th birthday).

A massive claw-shaped structure that will serve as the venue for the fights was recently erected on the South Lawn of the residence of the Commander in Chief, and the forecast suggests storms could be an issue on a night where fighters and spectators will also have to deal with plenty of heat and humidity when the slate of seven bouts unfolds on Sunday.

Those fights will also feature the “Octagon Girls” who are primarily tasked with strolling through the cage in between rounds, and some of the outfits they’ll be sporting clash with a set of standards established for respecting the American flag.

Some of the outfits the UFC’s Octagon Girls will be wearing at the White House violated the U.S. Flag Code

The UFC 250 Freedom card doesn’t boast any female fighters, but the event will feature the “Octagon Girls” who are responsible for displaying the number of each round before it gets underway.

Two-piece outfits have historically been their go-to form of attire, but the UFC has gone out of its way to get a bit more creative when it comes to events with a particular theme (like the costumes that were worn at UFC 306 as a celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day).

That will be the case at the White House event, as we got our first glimpse at the red, white, and blue costumes that were whipped up just for the occasion earlier this week.

The bulk of them directly incorporates the American flag, and while that’s far from the first time someone has decided to go that route, the decision to do so is a violation of Section 8 of the U.S. Flag Code. That particular section is devoted to respect for the stars and stripes and states: “No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform.”

It’s worth noting that the flag code is a series of guidelines as opposed to laws you can be punished for breaking, but having those violations front and center at an event being held in the shadow of the White House is certainly a bold choice.
