Caleb Williams And USC Wasted No Time Making Money From His Commitment To The Trojans

Caleb Williams officially committed to USC on Tuesday. Less than 24 hours later, the Trojans are already looking to capitalize on his transfer financially.

Williams, who spent his first season on the collegiate level at Oklahoma, committed to play for Lincoln Riley in Norman out of high school. When the five-star recruit arrived on campus, he was not expected to be the starter.

Spencer Rattler began the year as a Heisman Trophy candidate but was benched in the first half against Texas. Williams stepped into the starting role and led the Sooners back from the largest deficit in Red River Shootout history. From that point on, he was QB1.

Immediately after the regular season, Riley announced that he was leaving for the same job at USC. Williams chose to stay with his team through the bowl game under interim head coach Bob Stoops but hit the transfer portal shortly thereafter.

At that point, it was expected that Williams would join Riley in Los Angeles. However, despite the fact that he had silently committed to the Trojans when he visited in early January, Williams waited to announce.

Likely in an effort to avoid tampering accusations, Williams visited other programs, including cross-town rival UCLA, and was rumored to be interested in LSU and Wisconsin. At this point, as it did then, all of his interest in other schools seem like a smoke screen.

On Tuesday, Williams made things official. He committed to USC and enrolled in classes this week.

The Trojans are already looking to cash-in.

A day after Williams publicly committed, signed merchandise appeared in ‘The Official Store of USC Trojan Athletics.’ In partnership with Fanatics, the store offers jerseys, hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, jerseys and all of the standard accessories.

It also offers collectibles and memorabilia. That includes autographed merch from former players like Marcus Allen and Clay Matthews, as well as lapel pins and things of that nature.

As of Wednesday, it also includes four items autographed by Williams. The website lists the following, all with Williams’ signature:

  • Riddell Speed Replica Helmet — $349
  • White Panel Football — $199
  • Riddell Speed Mini Helmet — $149
  • Riddell Speed Logo Authentic Helmet — $549

Williams appears to be the only active player with autographed merchandise on the USC store. It must be part of his NIL agreement and he is likely getting a solid cut of the sales. Regardless of what the agreement looks like, the Trojans moved quick! Especially considering that Williams was linked to Wisconsin as recently as Monday — wink wink.
