It looks like there could be a quarterback controversy brewing in the NFL.

With questions brewing about the safety of Mac Jones and Zach Wilson’s starting jobs, it turns out the next big quarterback move could actually come from the other East division.

According to a report from FOX’s Jay Glazer, the Washington Commanders have a plan in place to replace Taylor Heinicke with Carson Wentz if Heinicke struggles against the San Francisco 49ers today.

The Washington Commanders appeared to have made the move to Heinicke permanent when Wentz returned from injury and didn’t get his starting job back. At the time, the Commanders had worked their way back into the playoff picture with Heinicke under center.

However, Heinicke’s actual impact on the team was questionable. Heinicke hadn’t much better statistically than Wentz, but the team was winning.

That has changed over the past couple of weeks. Heinicke’s play hasn’t changed much recently, but the Commanders settled for a tie and a loss in back to back games against the New York Giants.

Carson Wentz was struggling before his injury, so he might not be the answer the Commanders are looking for. The last time Wentz started for the Commanders, he threw for 99 yards against the Bears and the team scored 12 points.

If the Commanders put him back under center, he’ll have no time to shake off the rust as the Commanders face some tough defenses to close the year. The 49ers, Cowboys, and Browns will all make life difficult for whoever is playing quarterback for the Commanders.

Wentz or Heinicke will have to be better than they have been all year if the Commanders are going to work their way into the playoffs against that schedule.
