Webb Simpson Says Patrick Reed Being Heckled By Fans At Presidents Cup Is ‘Undeserved’ And That’s An Awfully Tough Look

Patrick Reed being heckled by fans, whether it be at a team event or not, is pretty status quo these days. However, after his whole cheating situation sweeping away sand to improve his lie in a waste bunker last week in The Bahamas, the boos and heckling from fans at this week’s Presidents Cup in Australia have been even more intense.

Reed was paired with Webb Simpson for the opening day’s four-ball matches and fell to C.T. Pan and Hideki Matsuyama 1-up.

After the round, Golf Channel caught up with Reed and asked him about the fans and he said it was exactly what he expected. Simpson decided to give his take on the matter too, without even being asked about it, and said it was ‘undeserved’ which is, well, something.

Sure, Simpson is simply standing up for his teammate by saying it was all undeserved, but good grief, read the room before interjecting yourself into this whole thing, sir.

Patrick Reed cheated, plain and simple, full stop. Simpson knows that, Tiger Woods knows that, Justin Thomas, every member of both teams knows that and so does every single person at the Presidents Cup this week so the boo-birds are going to reign down all week.

Simpson, however, by saying the booing and heckling is underserved is essentially saying that Reed did nothing wrong. He’s also telling every single fan that’s angry with Reed that they’re wrong, too, which again, is an awfully tough look.

There’s no way that Simpson hasn’t seen the clip of Reed raking back the sand to improve his lie. If he honestly believes that Reed is getting a bad rap here, that’s fine, but him inserting himself into the conversation and the frenzy that is the crowd at these team events was a bold move, to say the very least.
