The West Virginia baseball season came to an end on Sunday with a Super Regional loss to LSU. It was a must-win game for the Mountaineers, who’d already lost Game 1 of the double elimination series.

Despite a valiant effort to overcome an early deficit, West Virginia fell short. Emotions ran high as that final result began to set in.

The Tigers had the luxury of hosting the series in Baton Rouge thanks to a No. 6 overall national seeding. They took the first game of the set easily after jumping out a 10-1 lead. The bats again got going early in Game 2.

LSU was up 6-0 after two innings. West Virginia began to chip away at that lead, getting the score to 6-4 heading into the sixth frame. Then, disaster struck.

Three free passes and a pair of errors allowed the Tigers to blow the game open. LSU plated six runs in the seventh to make the score 12-4.

West Virginia pitcher Chase Meyer started that inning. He would not finish it. He was removed from the game after loading the bases with no one out thanks to an error, walk, and hit batter.

While exiting the playing field, he appeared to get into a shouting match with the home crowd. What was said remains unclear. Meyer was not happy, though!

West Virginia baseball player chirps at LSU fans.

Meyer was visibly frustrated as he made his way to the dugout. It was a disappointing ending to what had been a scoreless four-inning appearance.

The pitcher was only charged with one earned run, but it was certainly not the way he wanted to go out. The Mountaineers would eventually lose, 12-5.

The season came to an end two wins shy of a College World Series appearance. Still, there’s much for the West Virginia baseball team to build on following a 44-win campaign.
