Record-Setting Sturgeon Caught In British Columbia Is Likely The Largest Freshwater Fish Ever Landed By A Female Angler

An angler on the Fraser River in British Columbia just caught the fish of a lifetime. It is likely the largest freshwater fish ever caught by a female angler, a record-setting white sturgeon.

Fishing with Sturgeon Slayers on the Fraser River in B.C., the very same Sturgeon Slayers guiding service that in June landed the largest sturgeon ever measured in modern history, angler Katherine from St. Louis reeled in the 11-foot, 4-inch fish (fork length measurement) and it had a whopping 60″ girth!

11’6″ Sturgeon Slayers Fish Is Likely Largest Freshwater Fish Caught By A Female Angler

The angler, Katharine, sought out Sturgeon Slayers because she is a huge Nick Leddy fan (Stanley Cup Winner) and Leddy has caught some absolutely incredible sturgeon with the guiding service in years past. One thing about fishing on the Fraser River though is every day is like playing the lottery. You can catch the fish of a lifetime, a little guppy, or get skunked.

That said, there is nowhere on planet earth that offers up better sturgeon fishing that the Fraser River which is an entirely catch-and-release fishery in order to preserve the fishery itself and keep these living fossils intact.

This day in particular was like most others. It was overcast and gray. Katharine and her boyfriend had never been fishing on the Fraser River and only booked a 1-day charter with Sturgeon Slayers versus a multi-day trip which is common. So they put all their eggs in one basket, and it paid off.

One remarkable aspect about this fish is it had not been tagged before. So after catching it, they tagged the fish in case it is caught by any angler again in the future. That way they can document crucial data on growth and size.

Just take a look at the size of the fork on this fish’s tail. It is an absolute dinosaur of a fish:

Catching Records

Back in June when Sturgeon Slayers landed the new White Sturgeon fishing world record measuring 356cm Fork Length, that gave them records for THE TWO LONGEST sturgeon caught and measured in modern times.

Sturgeon Slayers had previously set the record for the largest sturgeon caught in modern times back in 2021 with this fish that measured 11 feet, 6 inches with a girth of 55 inches around! Following their incredible success, they now hold the record for what is almost certainly the largest freshwater fish ever caught by a female angler. Unfortunately, there is no specific fishing world record for that feat. It is simply an honor that Katharine and Sturgeon Slayers have because IGFA awards fishing world records specific to species, not just ‘biggest fish in history.’

But let’s check this fish out again, shall we?

I cannot fathom what it must’ve been like to see this rare fish first show its head and realize that there is an 11+ foot white sturgeon on the other end of the line!

What an absolute unit:

I have always loved to travel the world and whenever I get a chance to catch fish in new places. I’ve fished all throughout the Americas, and can say with 100% certainty that there is nowhere better for white sturgeon fishing than the Fraser River in British Columbia and taking it further, nobody catches bigger fish than Sturgeon Slayers.

Do yourself a favor and smash the ‘follow’ button for them on Instagram and visit their website where you can check out fishing packages if you are at all interested n catching a record white sturgeon. And I say that not because I have any skin in the game. I just love seeing these massive fish landed and then released back into the wild.
