It seemed like Oakmont was going to humble some of the best golfers on the planet during the U.S. Open, and that definitely ended up being the case. Wyndham Clark took out his frustration on a couple of lockers at the country club, and he owned up to that temper tantrum after catching plenty of heat.

The U.S. Open has a reputation for producing significantly higher scores than the rest of the majors on the calendar, and that was once again the case when it was held at Oakmont Country Club for the tenth time earlier this month.

Golf fans found themselves salivating ahead of the tournament due to the heavy rough that promised to wreak havoc on the field, and the course lived up to expectations thanks to the punishing conditions that led to J.J. Spaun winning his first major after finishing at -1—the only person in the 156-person field who ended up finishing under par.

The cut was set at +7 at the end of Friday’s round, and Wyndham Clark was one of a dozen golfers who ended up exactly one stroke above the threshold they needed to hit to qualify for the weekend.

He was eliminated shortly before a picture of a couple of damaged lockers in the changing room at Oakmont started to make the rounds along with a rumor that held him responsible for the distruction, and while it took him close to a week to own up, he did finally issue an apology after getting the chance to address the outburst at the Travelers Championship.

The man who won the U.S. Open when it was held at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023 expressed his regrets while making it clear he doesn’t want to linger on the incident that unfolded less than a month after he issued another apology for an outburst at Quail Hollow, saying:

“I’ve had a lot of highs and lows in my career—especially this year, some lows. I made a mistake that I deeply regret and I’m very sorry for what happened.

But I’d also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up.”

Clark ended up a couple of shots off the lead and in a tie for second after notching a 64 during his opening round at the Travelers, and it appears all of the lockers at TPC River Highlands emerged from Thursday unscathed.
