Colorado Rockies outfielder Zac Veen hit a monster home run at spring training on Saturday and proceeded to launch his bat directly at the pitcher’s mound. His bat flip was so vicious that he had to apologize mid-stride while running to first base.

The former top-100 prospect is off to a hot start in Arizona and the moonshot certainly got the attention of the team brass!

Veen, who turned 23 in December, was drafted No. 9 overall in the 2020 MLB Draft out of Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, Florida. He received a $5 million signing bonus to play Major League Baseball and chose not to attend the University of Florida as was expected.

Zac Veen is ready to take the next step!

It has been an up-and-down career for Zac Veen thus far. His rookie season was pushed back to 2021 due the pandemic but his impressive run on the Single-A level led him to get called up to Double-A by early August. Even though parts of 2023 and 2024 were lost to a freakish right thumb injury, he eventually worked his way up to the Triple-A level for 21 games at the end of last season.

His time on the highest level of the minor leagues was not great. Veen hit only .220 with six more strikeouts than hits in 82 at-bats and he decline saw him drop out of the Top 100 for MLB prospects.

This year could be different. There are a lot of reasons to expect a breakout season that could eventually result in a promotion to The Bigs. Saturday’s tater is the most recent!

Zac Veen went yard on a 2-0 pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning. His two-run home run traveled a whopping 433 feet and his bat traveled at least 60-feet, six inches from the plate to the mound.

The bat flip was so vicious that Veen actually had to apologize to the pitcher for almost nailing him. It wasn’t on purpose, he was just fired up!

Veen is currently 2-for-5 with one home run, four RBIs and one stolen base during Spring Training. Don’t be surprised if he makes the roster for Opening Day if he can keep this pace— “if” being the key word!
