People can’t get enough of this Australian World Cup fan fangirling over Walmart.
In a TikTok with over 980,000 views, Lisa Qi (@lisaxqi) made a pilgrimage to the store that promises that you can save money and live better simply by shopping there.
Super Tourist Trap?
Upon arrival, Qi and her friend take photos of the exterior of the mega store. “Wow! Super center parking,” Qi says as she pans around the parking lot.
Then they go inside.
They’re impressed with everything, from the size of the shopping carts to the size of the bakery. But it’s the processed food that steals Qi and her friend’s hearts. “Cool Whip! I want to try this,” she says, as she taps the screen with a manicured finger. Then Eggo Waffles, Velveeta Shells & Cheese, Starburst Jell-O, giant bags of cereal, and Sour Patch Kids all make it into their cart.
But it’s the Pringles that spark debate. There’s a dilemma about “the most American flavor.” Qi settles on ranch, but scorchin’ buffalo does make an appearance.
Kool-Aid In The Vodka?
The item that sparks the most discussion in the comments, though, is not the Sunny D or the Skittles freezer pops. It’s the Grape Liquid Kool-Aid. “Have you guys seen these things that it’s like flavoring concentrate basically, and you put it into alcohol, and it [tastes] really good? And it’s like really low calories apparently. I’m gonna try a few of these,” she says.
Then the internet attempts to intercede. “I mean it can go in alcohol but it’s for water babe [sobbing emoji],” user @htxslimmm said.
“Well now hold on.. that’s not how you use the flavor bottles but you might have just done something with that,” another viewer proclaimed.
But the best comment might summarize the unique place Walmart inhabits in the American retail landscape. “Walmart being a tourist attraction is diabolical,” a third said.
Then there’s the Walmart deep cut. “You know they have a Walmart museum in Bentonville Arkansas??? [laughing crying] its a whole a__ museum,” said a fourth. Perhaps some of the visiting World Cup fans will embark on a road trip.
Everybody Likes A Little Treat
As hilarious as the Aussies think American foods are, there’s a chance that their snacks are equally weird. First up, there are Cheezels. Described as “Australia’s tube-shaped answer to Cheetos” by Eater, they’re as “cheesy” as the cheese that goes crunch. But since they’re shaped like hoops, “you can stick them on your fingers like rings,” advises the site.
The ever-polarizing Vegemite also deserves a mention. Made of various vegetables, yeast extract, and spice additives, it’s a salty dark brown paste often eaten on toast. Sometimes it is eaten with avocado, melted cheese, or tomato. A writer on the Nomads site says, “It not only looks and smells disgusting it also tastes disgusting.” Yikes.
Another not-to-be-missed Down Under-style treat is Tim Tams. Comprised of “two chocolate biscuit pieces sandwiching a layer of mousse-like chocolate cream, all covered in a thin layer of chocolate,” they’ve been described as “better than Oreos.” And they’re available at Walmart.
But perhaps the most homegrown Australian food is Anzac biscuits. Made famous on the front lines of World War I, the biscuits (not cookies) are made with coconut, golden syrup. and oats. They’re named for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, who fought together in the first great world war.
