  • A large black bear in Connecticut jumped into a pig enclosure looking for an easy meal but wound up terrified and sprinting for the hills
  • Two large pigs were in the enclosure and attacked the bear, presumably to protect themselves and their food, and the bear did NOT see it coming

It’s a tale as old as time. Bear breaks into a pigsty. Pigs find bear. Pigs dominate bear. Bear regrets decision. Bear is sent fleeing for the hills.

This very real-life incident between a huge black bear and two large pigs in Connecticut was captured on film thanks to a home’s Ring security camera. The camera was presumably pointed at the pig’s living quarters in New Milford, Connecticut so the pig’s owners could keep a watch on their prized pigs.

The white pig is named Mary and the black hog is named Hammy. I’m assuming Hammy is short of Hamlet as that is the best name for a pet pig and it’s not even up for debate. Hammy was inside of the enclosure when Mary spotted the big black bear jumping into their living quarters and charged it. Then Hammy showed up and the two pigs scared the black bear enough to send it fleeing.

I’ll be honest, when that black bear reared up on two legs when it was backed in a corner I did NOT expect things to end well for the pigs. Backing any wild animal into a corner is a bad idea as their only instinct is to fight but the bear chose to climb out instead.

What Are People Saying About These Pigs Scaring The Bear?

Lolololololol at this person’s response:

The pig’s owner, Rebecca Shaw, told the local news “I am very proud of them because Hammy, the little one especially, he’s afraid of his own shadow and the way he came charging out when he seen Mary tussling with the bear. He was like ‘oh no, no way, get out.’”

What Do Black Bears Eat?

Black bears are omnivorous and their normal diet covers just about everything in the forest. They live off of berries, roots, fish, insects, grass, plants, other animals, and even honey.

A lot of people think the black bear isn’t tough. They have a reputation as living off of berries. But they can and DO take down deer and elk and are known to go after livestock (usually sheep) and livestock food. If I had to wager a guess, I think the bear here probably smelled the pig’s food and was more interested in that than the pigs.
