TikToker @ganjaababyyy filmed her reaction to someone swiping a red plastic gas can off her boat’s deck. The twist? That can wasn’t full of gasoline. It was full of diesel fuel.
“They’re gonna be pissed when they find out that that red can has diesel in it,” she says before breaking out into satisfied laughter. “Oh, man. Haha!”
Red cans are usually intended for gasoline, while yellow cans signal diesel fuel. The TikToker purposely filled the red can with diesel fuel, anticipating this exact scenario. “I love setting booby traps maybe people will learn…..” she captioned her video, which has been viewed 640,000 times since she posted it on Monday.
As it turns out, this gas can “booby trap” is not unheard of among boaters. “I remember asking my friend why he had diesel in red cans and gas in yellow cans and it was because of this exactly,” one viewer shared in the comments section.
“My grandpa would leave sugar gas and when someone was buying parts to fix their engine he would find out who it was,” another shared.
Commenters applauded the boater’s sabotage by sea.
“Please show us when you find the stranded boat,” one viewer pleaded.
“I had to look up what diesel does to normal engines. I love this for them,” another said.

So What Happens If You Put Diesel Fuel In Gas Engine?
Dumping diesel into a gasoline engine is a recipe for disaster.
Diesel is much thicker than gasoline, and it doesn’t ignite in the same way. Diesel fuel in a gas engine can not only clog one’s afternoon plans, but it can also lead to clogged fuel injectors and spark plugs.
Best-case scenario: The engine will sputter and stall. Worst case? One will need a full fuel system flush or a whole new engine. And that’s a pretty hefty repair or replacement bill. The cost of an engine depends on the boat type. For small boats, a new engine costs an average of $2,000.
Just to get it towed out of the water, one is looking at a $125 to $250 bill. And that’s if the tow is only around 40 miles; it becomes pricier the further out one is stranded.
So next time you think about stealing gas off someone’s boat, maybe don’t. Or at least sniff it first (gasoline smells like paint thinner, while diesel fuel smells like kerosene). Because, sometimes, red cans bite back.
