Doritos Made An Alcoholic Liqueur That Tastes Like A Cheesy Chip

There are plenty of people who’ve put a sizeable dent in a bag of Doritos after helping themselves to a few drinks, but I have a hard time imagining many of them have thought, “You know, I wish there was a way I could drink these chips.” However, if you’ve ever found yourself in that particular position, you’re now in luck.

If you keep tabs on the culinary world, you’re likely familiar with Noma, the highly decorated, Michelin-starred destination in Copenhagen that is widely considered the best restaurant in the world.

Plenty of chefs have spent time at Noma under the watchful eye of head honcho René Redzepi—including Lars Williams, who spent eight years in Denmark working as Noma’s head of research and development before opting to strike out on his own by founding Empirical, a “flavor company” that specializes in unconventional alcoholic spirits that don’t fall under a traditional categorical umbrella.

According to Food and Wine, its latest creation was inspired by Doritos, which serve as the basis for a new liqueur that promises to deliver “your favorite Nacho Cheese in liquid form.”

Empirical harnessed a “vacuum distillation” process that allowed it to capture the essence of the brand’s signature chip to create an alcoholic beverage that clocks in at 42% ABV and boasts the following flavor profile:

“The spirit opens with umami and tangy aromas of nacho cheese, moving to the deeper, corn-forward flavors of the chip to finish on a soft salty note.”

Initial reviews suggest the drink managed to perfectly capture the taste of Doritos, and while you can drink it straight, Empirical suggests deploying it in a margarita or Bloody Mary.

The collaboration will retail for $65 for a 750 ml bottle and will officially be up for grabs when preorders open up on December 13th.
