In 1989, a group of movie set designers built a baseball field in the middle of a cornfield in Dyersville, Iowa. The film, Field of Dreams, became one of the most iconic sports movies of the last 50 years.

After the release of the movie, the location became a massive tourist attraction for fans of the film and lovers of all things baseball. For the first time in 29 years, the owners of the farm are opening up the farmhouse to overnight guests.

People from all over the world come to see where the Kinsella family’s story unfolded in the 1989 classic and for the first time since the movie’s release, fans can now spend the night in the farmhouse’s one bedroom upstairs and enjoy the “Kinsella Experience.”

Guests will be greeted personally by the Movie Site staff and will receive a gift basket complete with:

  • Field of Dreams Movie Site Rawlings Baseball
  • A bottle of wine, two picnic wine glasses and a picnic tablecloth to enjoy in centerfield just like Ray and Annie do in the movie
  • A DVD of “Field of Dreams” with two, red and white striped boxes of popcorn to enjoy in the same nook where Karin, Ray and Annie’s daughter, is watching a ballgame and asks her dad “What’s a southpaw?”
  • The delightful book by Actor Dwier Brown, If You Build It, who plays John Kinsella, Ray’s dad, in the movie, that shares Dwier’s tales of being “America’s Dad” after his tear-inducing lines at the end of the movie

Today I learned the author of the book played Ray’s dad in the movie. Cool.

The only thing the trip doesn’t mention is doing anything baseball-related on the field. I suggest grabbing an apple out of the picnic basket and having a catch with your partner.
