After finally announcing their Phase 4 slate at San Diego Comic-Con in July, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe were finally able to begin letting their minds imagine who Marvel Studios will eventually cast in their favorite roles.

Whether it be who will take up the mantle of Wolverine or if the MCU will introduce legendary Spider-Man villain Norman Osborne into the fray, the announcement of Marvel’s Phase 4 slate was the first step towards painting the future of the behemoth comic book franchise.

And while some of those castings have been confirmed — such as Mahershala Ali as Blade and Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor — others remain rumors, including one surrounding one of the most memorable actors from the best television show of all-time, Breaking Bad.

According to a report from MCU CosmicBreaking Bad veteran Giancarlo Esposito is rumored to be up for a “major” role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While nothing official has been confirmed, the rumor was first reported by Jeremy Conrad of MCU Cosmic, who’s had a knack for this sort of thing in the past.

Fans are speculating that Esposito could potentially be up for the role of “The Benefactor”, which is the codename given to a character that appeared in a recent Marvel Studios casting call that was looking for a “mysterious and nefarious benefactor to be played by a male actor in their 40s to 60s.”

Again, while nothing is confirmed, the suspicion is that “The Benefactor” is actually the role of Norman Osborne, aka the iconic Spider-Man villain The Green Goblin.

Following the conclusion of The Infinity Saga with Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home, a rumored leak back in June suggested that Norman Osborne would be the next “big bad” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, similar to the role Thanos played through the MCU’s first three phases.

Given Esposito’s pedigree — his Breaking Bad character Gustavo Fring is easily one of the most chilling villains of the past decade in television, film, or otherwise — casting him in a villainous role in the MCU, regardless of what that role may ultimately be, would be a coup for Marvel Studios.
