There was a ton of hype surrounding the release of the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI, which was easily the most anticipated teaser in video game history—and if you somehow need proof that was the case, you have some courtesy of the world records it set in the span of 24 hours.

The folks at Rockstar Games had initially planned to release the GTA VI trailer on December 5th, but they were forced to upload it to YouTube the night before after it leaked on social media. However, that didn’t do much to diminish the excitement surrounding our first look at the latest installment in the wildly popular (and wildly profitable) franchise.

GTA VI will be transporting players back to Vice City for what promises to be a painfully Floridan experience, and while fans will unfortunately have to wait until 2025 to immerse themselves in that virtual world, it’s a bit hard to imagine it’s not going to be worth the wait.

According to the people who hand out Guinness World Records, the GTA VI trailer racked up a grand total of 90,421,491 views in the first full day it was online, which was enough to shatter the record for the most-watched video game trailer in history and earn the most likes in that category with 8.9 million.

It also surpassed Mr. Beast for the most-watched “non-music” YouTube video ever, as the upload in question “only” accumulated 59.4 million views in the first 24 hours. The only mark the trailer wasn’t able to surpass was the 108 million views the South Korean supergroup BTS accrued in 24 hours when the music video for “Butter” premiered in 2021.

We’ll almost certainly be getting a second trailer and more information concerning what to expect from GTA VI at some point in 2024, and while it’s very unlikely the follow-up will be able to surpass these records, it’ll definitely still do some very impressive numbers.
