As much of the world begins opening back up, removing restrictions on numerous businesses and activites and reducing social distancing requirements, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports the largest daily increase in worldwide coronavirus cases recorded so far took place this past Sunday, June 7.

On Monday, WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “Although the situation in Europe is improving, globally it is worsening. More than 100,000 cases have been reported on 9 of the past 10 days. Yesterday, more than 136,000 cases were reported, the most in a single day so far.”

Maria van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on the virus, also stated the global pandemic is “far from over.”

According to a WHO transcript of the Director-General’s media briefing, around three-quarters of the record high number of new cases reported on Sunday were from 10 countries, mostly in the Americas and South Asia.

“In these countries, the biggest threat now is complacency. Results from studies to see how much of the population has been exposed to the virus show that most people globally are still susceptible to infection,” Ghebreyesus added.

“We continue to urge active surveillance to ensure the virus does not rebound, especially as mass gatherings of all kinds are starting to resume in some countries.”

In his closing remarks, Ghebreyesus stated, “More than six months into this pandemic, this is not the time for any country to take its foot off the pedal. This is the time for countries to continue to work hard, on the basis of science, solutions and solidarity.”

As Dr. Mike Ryan, WHO emergencies chief, stated about the report, “We need to focus now on what we are doing today to prevent second peaks.”

Sadly, despite reasons for optimism, this is still a long way from being over, folks.
