Leave It To ‘Halloween’ Director John Carpenter To Have The Best Review Of ‘Barbie’

John Carpenter, the legendary director of films such as Halloween, Escape from New York, The Thing, and more, has always famously said whatever is on his mind, especially when it comes to his thoughts about movies, so you can only imagine what he had to say about Barbie.

During a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Carpenter was asked whether or not he still goes to the movies, which prompted him to uncork his singular review of Barbie, which is both the highest-grossing film of the year and an expected contender at the Academy Awards.

“I don’t go out. I haven’t been to a movie in a while, but I see them at my house. I’ll see it there. I watched Barbie. I can’t believe I watched Barbie, Carpenter began.

“It’s just not my generation. I had nothing to do with Barbie dolls. I didn’t know who Allan was. I mean, I can sum it up. She says, ‘I don’t have a vagina,’ and then at the end, ‘I’m going to go to a gynecologist!’ That’s the movie to me. I mean, there’s a patriarchy business in there, but I missed that whole thing. Right over my head.”

Carpenter did highlight one specific element of the film, though, and that was its star: Margot Robbie.

“But I think she’s fabulous, Margot Robbie,” Carpenter added.

Carpenter was speaking to the Los Angeles Times to promote his new anthology horror series John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams, which he executive produced, composed the score for, and directed an episode of. The series marks Carpenter’s first time sitting in the director’s chair since 2010’s The Ward, which was also his last feature film.

The release of Barbie on Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and DVD will happen next week on Tuesday, October 17, before it eventually begins streaming on Max sometime this fall.
