Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to James Gunn’s Superman, has officially begun production. To mark the occasion, Gunn revealed the official logo for the film while also teasing a key plot point in the film.

Always active on social media, James Gunn announced this week that principal photography has begun on the Superman sequel, set for a July 9, 2027 release, by sharing a photo from the set alongside a clapperboard adorned with what seems to be the film’s logo.

The centerpiece of the photo is a chessboard alongside a prison ID badge for inmate “LUTHOR, A,” which serves as an obvious nod to the dynamic at the center of the film — Gunn has confirmed the story will force Clark Kent and Lex Luthor into an uneasy alliance against the intergalactic villain Brainiac, who is being played by Lars Eidinger. The prison ID suggests Luthor is behind bars when the film opens, which tracks with where Superman left Nicholas Hoult’s Lex at the end of last year’s film.

Superman stars David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), will all be returning for Man of Tomorrow and while be joined by Adria Arjona, whose casting was announced last week. While reports indicate Arjona is playing Maxima, many fans think that’s merely a cover to hide her actual role of Wonder Woman.

Alongside Corenswet, Hoult, Brosnahan, Arjona, and Eidinger, Man of Tomorrow will also star Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/Engineer, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
