Morgan Wallen managed to cause a bit of a stir in March when he awkwardly exited the Saturday Night Live stage at the end of the episode where he’d served as the musical guest. He declined to immediately address that premature departure, but we have some insight into what went down now that he’s opened up a bit.

Saturday Night Live has undergone plenty of changes since it debuted all the way back in 1975, but there are a number of traditions that have stood the test of time.

For example, every episode traditionally ends with the cast assembling on the stage in Studio 8H as that week’s host announces the show has come to a close while flanked by whoever was tapped to be the musical guest, and the camera lingers to allow viewers to watch them trade words and gestures of congratulations (and relief) as the credits roll.

However, that was not the case when Mikey Madison hosted SNL on March 29th for an episode where country music star Morgan Wallen served as the musical guest for the second time.

Plenty of people noticed Wallen declined to stick around with Madison and the rest of the cast when things officially wrapped up, and we also learned he skipped the star-studded afterparty when he posted a picture of a private jet with the caption “Get me to God’s country” around an hour-and-a-half later.

The show cracked a couple of jokes referencing the “incident” the following week, and while an unnamed source attempted to downplay the ensuing drama by asserting Wallen had exited the stage in the same manner during the rehearsals leading up to his performance, it didn’t do much to quell theories about some bad blood fueled by a report that said he declined to participate in a sketch he was asked to appear in.

Wallen, who took advantage of the fallout by selling “Get Me To God’s Country Merch,” provided us with the most insight we’ve gotten to date during his chat with Caleb Pressley on the most recent installment of Sundae Conversation.

Wallen denied lingering tensions contributed to his decision to peace out from SNL, simply saying, “I was ready to go home. I’d been there all week.”

Some people might have wanted a more exhaustive explanation from a man who obviously wants to put it all behind him, but that’s probably the most information we’re going to get out of him in the foreseeable future.
