Ancient Egyptian pharaohs were prepared for the afterlife by having their tombs stocked with tools, clothing, jewels, daggers, food and anything else they could possibly need in the afterlife. Because being dead is exhausting and who wouldn’t want a nice snack for the afterlife? A Pennsylvania grandpa is taking a page out of the ancient Egyptians playbook by being buried with food, specifically a cheesesteak because Philadelphia.
To be buried wit or witout that is the question. For Richard Lussi he wisely chose wit. The 76-year-old grandpa would frequently joke with his family that he wanted to be buried with something to eat in the afterlife. He, of course, wanted to have a delicious cheesesteak from Pat’s, an iconic cheesesteak joint in Philly. Richard, who is from Plains Township, Pennsylvania, died on Oct. 10 from heart complications.
On the day before Richard’s funeral, his son John and his grandson Dominic drove two-and-a-half hours to Pat’s King of Steaks and picked up two cheesesteaks. “We were just going to get one but my pop always said ‘If you’re going to Pat’s you always get two, you never order just one. It’s a waste of time,'” said Dominic Lussi. As to Richard’s preference of cheesesteak, “He said, ‘What do you think? Pat’s cheesesteak! Pat’s wiz without — no onions because they’ll come back to haunt me,’” said Dominic Lussi. John said his dad was a Philly sports fanatic and before games he would always go to Pat’s and whenever he was anywhere near Philadelphia.
They placed the cheesesteaks in Lussi’s coffin, fulfilling Richard’s dying wish. They wisely placed the bag of cheesesteaks in Lussi’s coffin after the viewing to prevent any hungry mourners from eating Richard’s food. All he’s missing is a soft pretzel and a 6-pack of Yuengling in his coffin.
