A woman has shared her pit bull's discovery and it might tell us a lot about future weather.
Dogs are curious creatures. But when this owner discovered exactly what her pit bull was sniffing at, viewers told her that the finding was more significant than it looks.
In the video, which has amassed 3,115 views, Heather Wetzel (@iamheathermarie38) showed her very good dog intensively sniffing near a fence behind a trash can.
“OK, if TikTok has taught me anything, it’s to record nonsense…” she said. “I don’t know what it is, he’s kind of freaking me out… like Arby, what is it? Like, what is it? What is it, and where is it?”
As he continued to sniff, she repeated, “Like, Arby, what is it? You’re freaking me out like so bad. What is it?”
“Like, it has to be little to fit behind whatever crack you think it’s behind, so I’m really scared,” she continued.
Eventually, Wetzel moves the trash can. She discovers a black fluffy caterpillar on the fence.
“Seriously?” she asks. “It’s a f——… Arby, are you trying to get a caterpillar?”
Viewers Say It’s More Than Just A Caterpillar
Commenters shared that there was something special about the caterpillar Arby found.
“Ma’am, that’s a Woolly worm,” one wrote. “And be ready for a harsh winter.”
“That’s a Woolly Bear and it’s saying we’re gonna have a harsh winter!” a second added.
While a third echoed, “He wants you to know that you are going to have an extra snowy winter!”
What Is The Woolly Bear Caterpillar Lore?
Woolly Bear caterpillars are the larvae of Isabella tiger moths. The creature, whose technical name is the Hypercompe scribonia, is not only adorable. As commenters have said, they are also, apparently, able to tell you how harsh winters are going to be.
According to ThoughtCo, this is common folklore. The Woolly Bear’s coloring, which can vary, is supposedly the thing that indicates future weather. Essentially, the caterpillar is divided into thirteen different segments. Each of these segments, supposedly, is meant to indicate one of the thirteen weeks in winter. The black bands represent colder, snowier, and generally more severe weather. Meanwhile, the orange bands are meant to represent milder weather.
Consequently, since the caterpillar in the video is all black, this is one clue that we will be seeing a harsh winter. ThoughtCo also mentions other similar theories, like the direction the caterpillar crawls, and that the fluffier the caterpillar, the harsher the winter. And given this caterpillar looks like a feather boa, we can double down on the winter theory here.
