Robert Pattinson Is Surprised More People Weren’t Pissed That He Was Cast As Batman

Robert Pattinson Thought Batman Backlash Would Be More Widespread

Warner Bros.

  • Robert Pattinson was first tapped to star as Bruce Wayne in The Batman back in 2019.
  • Three years later, the film is now finally playing in theaters.
  • Surprisingly, the former Twilight star says he was “mocked less than usual” after being cast as the Dark Knight.

For virtually my entire time here at BroBible, I’ve been trying to convince my boss Cass that Robert Pattinson would be a good Batman. And so far, despite the fact that the film is receiving nearly unanimous high praise, I’ve yet to succeed.

You see, Cass is about a decade older than I am, and because of that, he was a full-grown adult by the time Pattinson made his comeback as Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise. I, on the other hand, have literally never seen a single one of those films and have only seen Pattinson in his recent indie work. Because of that, the two of us have starkly different perceptions of who the 35-year-old Englishman is as an actor.

Cass certainly isn’t alone in his opinion of Pattinson, though, as there have been tons of movie fans in recent years who questioned whether or not the former “sparkly vampire” would be able to play arguably the most popular superhero of all time. Surprisingly, though — according to Pattinson himself — the backlash hasn’t been as intense as he expected, as he actually feels he was “mocked less than usual.”

Pattinson took the initial backlash in stride. “I was actually mocked less than I usually am,” the actor, seated alongside Reeves, said over Zoom on a recent afternoon. He laughed. “I was quite shocked. ‘Only 70% negative? A-plus!’” [via Los Angeles Times]

‘The Batman’ Review: The Dark Knight And Gotham City Has Never Felt More Alive

With Tenet and The Batman already under his belt, and with a starring role in Bong Joo-ho’s (director of Parasite) next film lined up, I’ve got a feeling that Pattinson is going to be mocked a lot less in general.

The Batman — which stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Jeffrey Wright as Gotham City Police Commissioner James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham District Attorney Gil Colson — is now playing in theaters.
