The Official Trailer For ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is The Perfect Homage To The 1980s Classic

Top Gun celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2016, and a year later, we learned that a sequel to the 1980s classic was officially in the works in the form of Top Gun: Maverick that would feature Tom Cruise hopping back into his flight suit to reprise his role as the titular pilot.

Since then, we’ve been treated to a steady stream of details about what we can expect from the followup, which will reportedly center around Goose’s son (who will be portrayed by Miles Teller) as the trainees at Miramar adjust to a new era of aerial combat that’s been largely defined by the rise of drone-centric warfare.

Top Gun: Maverick was originally slated to hit theaters last July but was ultimately delayed another year after Paramount decided it needed more time to perfect the technology required to do the dogfighting sequences justice (which was perfectly fine by me).

However, the studio did give us a bit of a Top Gun fix over the summer when it released the first trailer for the sequel, which seems like it’ll be worth the wait based on what we’ve seen so far.

Now, we’ve been hooked up with another look at the movie in the form of its first official trailer, which dropped on Monday morning to give us a little bit of an adrenaline boost to start the week.

While the newest trailer doesn’t reveal a ton about the plot, it does confirm that Top Gun: Maverick will have plenty of things in common with the original, including:

  • Tom Cruise riding a motorcycle
  • An awesome mustache
  • Someone tragically dying
  • Pilots taking over a bar (where they’ll hopefully sing in unison)
  • People playing sports on the sand while shirtless

Sadly, Kenny Loggin’s “Danger Zone” failed to make an appearance but the singer has confirmed it will appear in the new film so I for one am very amped to catch this once it hits theaters in June.
