Some vacationers like to take advantage of conversion rates to treat themselves to meals that would be more expensive in their home countries. However, one Australian couple realized a simple error in their math led them to overspend by hundreds of dollars on their wagyu steak dinner.
In a video with over 8.5 million views, TikToker Gabby Jensen (@gabbyjenny1105) and her partner stare at the final dinner bill in disbelief after getting one wagyu steak each.
On-screen text explains the couple’s mistake. It reads, “POV you find out the wagyu steak was $300 each not $30 each.” The caption continues, “What’s worse me not being able to convert rupiah to AUD or thinking wagyu steak is $30.”
How Much Does Wagyu Usually Cost?
Wagyu beef is typically much more expensive than other cuts of steak due to the marbling that gives it a desirable taste and texture. The cows that produce wagyu beef have undergone generations of selective breeding.
While wagyu costs in Bali range widely depending on the steakhouse, other Redditors who have traveled there suggested that some restaurants do serve $30 wagyu. So, the couple’s assumption wasn’t too far off. However, high-end steakhouses in Bali may charge hundreds of dollars for their best cuts.
Jensen shows a picture of the wagyu steak in a follow-up video, revealing that the couple didn’t even get a full steak each. Instead, the meat was cut up into around 10 small chunks on a tiny plate.
“Yeah I did know it was expensive but I’m used to being served a huge piece of steak,” she wrote in a comment. “Everything else on the menu was bite size and not more than $15. Obv realised I was an idiot after the fact and it definitely was delicious as hell !”
Too Distracted To Notice
In a follow-up video, Jensen shows footage of the hibachi experience right before they unknowingly ordered $600 worth of wagyu steak.
Jensen stands behind the grill in a chef’s hat and successfully flips an egg into the top of the hat. Her toddler cheers from his seat. On-screen text reads, “Yall wonder why we didn’t read the menu.”
However, some commenters suggested that the steak was ultimately worth it after seeing how much fun the family seemed to have at the restaurant.
“Pure joy in his face,” one remarked.
“Worth every penny,” a second viewer wrote. Jensen responded, “Truely.”
Another added, “In that case: I wouldn’t be so sad paying the $300 each steak hahaha the joy on your kids face is priceless.”
Others shared their own stories about mis-converting prices in Bali, leading them to spend way more than they hoped on their trips.
“Don’t worry I did this in Bali too on my wedding day,” a viewer said. “Bought two bottles of campaign think they were $100 and $140 each. No turns out they were $1000 and $1400 each.”
“So the real gag is my partner and I made the same mistake AND THEN proceeded to get Bali belly from the $600 meal,” another wrote.
“Thought a couples massage at our resort was $130 aud was $1300,” a third added.
@gabbyjensen1105 What’s worse me not being able to convert rupiah to AUD or thinking wagyu steak is $30 #fail #broke #fyp #holidaysover😒
