Mark Wahlberg Became A Producer Because He Was Tired Of Losing Roles To Superior Actors

During a recent wide-ranging interview with Cigar Aficionado, actor Mark Wahlberg detailed why he decided to become a producer in recent years.

According to the Academy Award nominee, one of the main motivations behind becoming a producer was that he was tired of losing out on roles to superior actors such as Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tom Cruise.

“I started producing out of necessity…The reason I started producing was because I didn’t want to sit around waiting for Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise or whoever was already established before me and were the guys at the time, and Leo [DiCaprio] to go and pass on a movie until I could get my hands on it,” Wahlberg said

“So I was always proactive in trying to find material and things that I could produce, that I knew was right for me, create my own destiny.”

What makes Wahlberg’s revelation even funnier is that the same remains true today: Leonardo DiCaprio is consistently competing for Oscars, Brad Pitt is one of the biggest producers in Hollywood with his Plan B label, and Tom Cruise remains arguably the biggest box office draw in the world.

Wahlberg last appeared in a trio of films back in 2022, none of which were particularly successful: Uncharted, Father Stu, and Me Time (he played a character named Huck Dembo in this one — had to watch it for an interview, it was atrocious).

Currently, Wahlberg is attached to star in films such as Arthur the King alongside Simu Liu, The Union with Halle Berry, and the AppleTV+ action comedy The Family Plan. At this time, however, none of those three films have official release dates.
