Hikers Capture Rock Slide ‘Avalanche’ At Zion National Park While Being Trapped Inside A Massive Dust Cloud

Zion National Park in Utah

A rock slide near Weeping Rock in Utah’s Zion National Park caused chaos and panic for a group of hikers that were caught inside the massive dust storm and falling rocks.

Miraculously, all of the folks in the video filmed by Carolyn Morell on TikTok appear to have made it out relatively unscathed and without suffering serious injuries. Because another video from across the canyon shows the scope of the ‘avalanche‘ rock slide at Zion and they are truly fortunate to have escaped without any massive boulders landing on or near them.

The first video which was shared by Morell to TikTok shows the group of Zion hikers huddling under a tiny ledge and covering their heads from falling rocks as the rock slide at Weeping Rock kicked off a dust storm that led to just a few feet of visibility.

In a second video shared by KSL News, the Zion rock slide can be seen from across the canyon. This one does a great job of illustrating the scale of this disaster and how lucky the hikers were to avoid the falling rocks.

Carolyn Morell did share a third video while hiking out of the area after the rock slide occurred but the eerie dust cloud remained. Zion National Park does have trails that are really well marked and defined by after a massive rock slide those trails were likely obfuscated and with just a few feet of visibility at first it must’ve felt like a nightmare hiking out of there slowly.

Alas, they were safe. After a near-death experience, which this 100% was with the group huddling for shelter from falling rocks, it’s not uncommon to experience a sense of calmness after the panic subsides.

I’m speaking mostly from personal experience and near brushes with death, but the aftermath where you’re pondering the preciousness and fragility of life leads you down a very introspective path. I can’t imagine what it was like for them hiking out of that trail after that experience but I know for sure, the headspace was VASTLY different from when they hiked in.
