There have been so many plausible Game of Thrones theories as fans attempt to predict who will sit on the Iron Throne by the end of Season 8 of the hit HBO show and how they will get there. This new Game of Thrones fan theory centers around Ser Davos Seaworth and it is so unthinkable, yet believable that it could change everything in the land of Westeros. Spoilers ahead.

Redditor FollowTheBeard has laid out a compelling case that Davos is not just a secondary character in Game of Thrones, but rather a major primetime player who can alter the power structure in Westeros. FollowTheBeard presented an interesting and conceivable argument on Reddit that Azor Ahai reborn is not Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen, but rather Ser Davos.

Back in the first episode of Season 2, Melisandre is burning effigies of the “false gods” in a ceremony to reveal that Stannis Baratheon is the Prince that was Promised. “In the ancient books, it is written that a warrior will draw a burning sword from the fire, and that sword shall be Lightbringer. Lord of Light, your sword awaits you,” Melisandre tells Stannis. Then he walks over to a burning false god, pulls out a fiery sword, and then stabs it into the sand. After the crowd has left the ceremony, Davos walks over to the sword, casually picks it up, and then walks away with it. Could this scene be foreshadowing that Davos Seaworth is Azor Ahai reborn?

Another possible clue that the Onion Knight is the Prince that was Promised is that he matches up with a prophecy of the rebirth of Azor Ahai. Melisandre said that the Warrior of Light will return “when the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.”

During the Battle of Blackwater, Baratheon’s fleets were decimated by Tyrion’s wildfire attack. Everyone thought Davos died during the brutal battle, however, he was one of the few that survived. When Salladhor Saan sees that Davos is still alive, he tells Seaworth, “You’ve only just come back to life. Stay alive a little longer, my friend.” When Stannis is reunited with Davos after the battle he tells him, “I had heard you were dead.” So Davos was metaphorically born again.

The smoke could mean the wildfire and the salt might possibly mean seawater from the deadly battle. The prophecy saying “darkness gathers” could mean the nighttime battle at “Black”water. The red star bleeds could be the comet with the red tail that was seen during Season 2.

As far as waking the “dragon from the stone” portion of the prophecy, Ser Davos Seaworth was the one who awoke Jon Snow, who is a Targaryen and they are the only family to keep and ride dragons, plus their sigil is a three-headed dragon breathing flames. Jon Snow was dead on a stone slab until he was resurrected with Ser Davos right by his side. Melisandre knew she couldn’t resurrect Snow and nothing happened during her ritual, but it was Davos who brought Jon back to life. Melisandre left the room and Davos begins pleading with Jon to come back to life, seconds later Jon is alive and gasping for air.

However, the most intriguing argument may have not even been on the show or the books. Just before Season 6 premiered, Liam Cunningham, the actor who plays Davos, gave an interview to Conan O’Brien. The actor revealed that when he first met George R.R. Martin, the iconic writer told him a secret.

“This was a couple of years ago. It was the first time I met him, and I was awestruck. He said, ‘I’ve got something to tell you.’ And he leaned in and he told me this secret. He said, ‘Don’t tell anybody.’ So I’m not.”

So why was Cunningham privy to a secret from Martin, but not others?

This is a fascinating fan theory.
