The Crazy, And Grisly, True Stories That Inspired The Film ‘Fargo’

The 1996 film Fargo received seven Oscar nominations when it came out winning two awards: Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Writing (Original Screenplay) for the Coen Brothers.

It also, as MANY of you know, inspired a hit television series which now airs on FX.

The film opens with this statement: “THIS IS A TRUE STORY. The events depicted in this film took place in Minnesota in 1987. At the request of the survivors, the names have been changed. Out of respect for the dead, the rest has been told exactly as it occurred.”

Yet at the end of the film it says that the movie is a work of fiction – something the Coen Brothers have also stated since the film’s release.

However, as you will see in the video the plot for Fargo bears an eerie resemblance to a few of other stories that actually did take place – all of them very bizarre and in some cases quite grisly.
