For Killer Mike and El-P, the rap duo and creative forces behind Run The Jewels, it wasn’t enough to put out one of the most amazing debut albums in rap. They needed to take it up a level. How does the future or rap follow-up such an accomplishment? They didn’t run and hide. They put out the sequel, Run The Jewels 2, in 2014 and it was one of the sickest albums of the year.
Album three, aptly named Run The Jewels 3, is being recorded as we speak. Blending sounds together is a skill. Numerous elements go into making such a complex album like Run The Jewels 3, much like so many elements go into making Jägermeister. Jägermeister blends together 56 natural ingredients that are aged in 445 oak barrels hewn from wood grown in the local “Pfälzerwald” while geniuses like Killer Mike and El-P crush together lyrics, rhymes and beats aged inside their minds for who knows how long.
Neither task is easy, but when the entire process comes together, it’s as close to perfection as music or alcohol can get.
The duo took time away from the recording studio to talk to us about childhood dreams, working together and how stubbornness eventually led to success.
