In this day and age, we have more TV viewing options than ever before. It’s hard to know where to even start. I’m about 70 shows behind based on recommendations and what’s popular these days. Wouldn’t you like to travel back to a simpler time during the golden age of network television? I’d recommend starting with the 1970s crime drama CHiPs, which you can watch FREE on Plex this month.
Most people in my generation know Erik Estrada as a frequent cast member on reality shows with his winning smile and losing toupees. That feels like a disservice to his time as Officer Frank “Ponch” Poncherello, a hotshot California Highway Patrol cop keeping the roads safe with his partner Jon Baker (played by Larry Wilcox).
Growing up, my dad always made a point to sit me down to watch old TV shows from the 1970s. You can sum up CHiPs and most other shows from that era with a few tropes: great hair, silly side quests, and an endless stream of freeze frames. I wish I could tell the perfect joke to my friends and we all freeze in place right when laughter broke out.
