Lana & Rusev mention Malaysian plane tragedy to piss off crowd at WWE Battleground — UPDATED

“”

Here’s one way to get instant heat from a wrestling crowd — use a recent tragedy to piss off fans.

Lana tried to get around it by saying “recent current events” but we all know what she’s making reference to — the Malaysian airline tragedy. Fans and internet pundits are getting on Lana back for the cheap heat. I really don’t think it’s a big deal.

The WWE has a long history of using current events in their story lines. Lana and Rusev have spent the last few months pushing the anti-American rhetoric. Lana HAD to mention what’s going on in real life to add depth to her and Rusev’s character. I’d be pissed if Lana didn’t mention the recent tension between the US and Russia.

She tiptoed around it, saying “recent current events”, which is a whole hell of a lot better than the other options.

UPDATED — WWE has issued a statement about last night’s PPV and Lana’s comments.

“Last night’s segment during WWE’s Battleground event was in no way referring to the Malaysia Airlines tragedy. The storyline with characters Rusev and Lana has been a part of WWE programming for more than 3 months. WWE apologizes to anyone who misunderstood last night’s segment and was offended.”

And there you have it.
