How to make the Ultimate Oreo Ice Cream Sandwich

Colin Joliat

There has been very little ice cream sandwich innovation in the past decade. That changes today with the Ultimate Oreo Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s easy to make and will change the way you eat dessert forever.

I come across a lot of things that make me say, “I should definitely try that,” like a ridiculous recipe for Oreo Lasagna or something that could be tweaked into greatness with a little booze. Other times there is a glaring hole in the market and a recipe needs to be invented to fill it. That why we have my bastard lovechild of Lifehacker and Pinterest, the Guyism Grill.

It’s always a safe bet when a recipe only has five ingredients that I made it up myself, especially when it’s more like three ingredients. Ice cream sandwiches were my favorite dessert as a kid though, and I really wanted to improve them. Sure there are ones involving Cookies and Cream ice cream or chocolate chips, but I really wanted to screw with my taste buds.

Enter the Ultimate Oreo Ice Cream Sandwich, complete with two non-traditional Oreo flavors and two different candy ice creams.

Start by separating the cookies into two halves. If you’re not able to get a clean cream-less half, call David Naveel, and he’ll get you squared away. The Golden Oreos have significantly less filling than the Chocolate/Peanut Butter Oreos, which is clearly racist, so you might want to sacrifice a few extra cookies to double the cream.

Now comes the tough part, cutting ice cream into a cylinder. My first attempt failed miserably. I’m not sure what I was thinking, but I apologize to all those who don’t have ice cream for wasting some of mine.

Using a cookie as an outline, cut a cylinder down into the carton. It would be easier with a hot knife, but you’ll struggle with the ice cream melting throughout the sandwich making process, so it’s worth the extra effort to keep it as cold as possible.

Now cut the ice cream into slices. Don’t cut too thin or it will quickly start to melt. No one wants a puddle of ice cream on their sandwich. Put the sliced ice cream in the freezer, and start on the second carton. Leave the finished ice cream discs in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. You’ll need them good and firm for the sandwich stacking procedure.

The sandwiches consist of two cream-covered halves of Oreos, because they are obviously superior, and one dry center cookie of the opposite color. Don’t even think about putting cream in the middle of the sandwich, or you’ll ruin everything.

Take the re-frozen ice cream discs from the freezer and load them up on the cookies. Not shining hot lights on them will help yours to remain perfectly frozen, but that obviously wasn’t an option for photographic reasons.

Put all the pieces in place, and you’ve got yourself the Ultimate Oreo Ice Cream Sandwich. All you need is a little caramel to really tie the room together, and you’re all set! Not only did you get to eat cookies and ice cream along the way, you now have delicious and beautiful looking sandwiches to serve to your guests.

You can re-freeze them if the ice cream has started to melt or you want to save them for later, but who are we kidding? You know you’re eating all of these right now. Sharing isn’t caring; it’s for suckers.
