While everyone loses their shit over Brexit, and all of the potentially disastrous ramifications of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, some Texans are saying, “That looks fucking awesome!” There are rumblings coming out of the Lone Star state about Texas getting their own independence by seceding from the United States in what could only be called “Texit.”
A Texit movement is gaining steam after Texans watched the United Kingdom break away. The Texas Nationalist Movement is urging those from the Lone Star state to support the idea of Texas becoming their own republic. This may sound like some crazy far-fetched idea, but the movement has a great deal of support. The Texas Nationalist Movement has over 200,000 supporters on Facebook. For comparison, the Texas Democratic Party has 130,000 and the state’s GOP page only 75,000. The TNM has garnered over 264,000 signatures from citizens who want to break away from the Union.
“It is now important for Texas to look to #Brexit as an inspiration and an example that Texans can also take control of our destiny,” the group’s president, Daniel Miller, told the New York Daily News. “It is time for Texans to rally with us and fight for the right to become a self-governing nation.”
Based on the $1.6 trillion economy in Texas, if it did become a separate country, it would be among the 10 top economies in the world, Miller says.
The TNM is aiming for 2018 to enact the state to allow a vote on independence from the U.S. and its “sprawling Federal bureaucracy.”
The last state to secede from the U.S. was Texas. Back in 1861, Texas held a referendum vote to secede. With a final tally of 166 to 8 in favor of Texas seceding from the Union. They joined South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to leave the United States before the Civil War.
