New Study Shows Number Of Times People Check Their Phone Each Day And The Number Seems Incredibly Low

How many times have you checked your cell phone today? Just take a guess. I’ll guess it was at least five, or as many as 15, times since you got out of bed. I’ll even guess that some of you didn’t even wait to get out of bed, you grabbed it off the nightstand and checked it while still under the covers. You’re obviously not alone.

The consulting firm Deloitte surveyed almost 50,000 people, ages 18 to 74, in over thirty countries for its annual Global Mobile Consumer Survey. The results of the study concluded that Americans are constantly checking our phones. Nearly half of the country checks their phones up to 25 times a day.

But honestly, that number seems low. As I said earlier, people check their phones before they even get out of bed. Let’s assume the average person is awake for 15 hours in a day. Just checking the phone twice an hour is 30 times and the average person glances at their phone WAY MORE than two times in an hour.

The study also found the most common times people pick up their smartphone for a little tech love.

When it’s time to wake up, 17 percent of people check their smartphones immediately, and 43 percent check them within five minutes. And when it’s time to go to bed, 13 percent of people check their phones immediately before sleeping, and 33 percent check them within five minutes before hitting the hay.

The only bright spot in the survey is the number of people using cell phones for fitness reasons — step tracking, running — so at least people are exercising more. Too bad texting doesn’t burn more calories, we’d all be ripped.
