The 2023 Red Bull Rampage delivered a deeply cathartic moment for winner Cam Zink who previously won the event 13 long years ago and had been training tirelessly to claim the title once again. And we’ve got highlights of the gnarliest crashes, biggest airs, and best runs from the 2023 Red Bull Rampage.

This was the 17th edition of the Red Bull Rampage which is the only event of its kind in the world. That means competitors spend nearly 12 months of the year training for this event and this event alone. They are judged on a combination of difficulty of the line they choose down the mesa, the tricks they throw down during their runs, speed, style, and overall execution.

I was fortunate enough to travel to Virgin, Utah (just outside of Zion National Park) for the Red Bull Rampage a few years ago and experience the event firsthand. They gave my unfettered access to the mountain and athletes over the course of a few days and that community of riders is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. They are a deeply competitive and extremely tight-knit group where every rider desperately wants to win while also seeing his friends succeed.

Gnarliest Crash At The 2023 Red Bull Rampage

Clemens Kaudela was one of the 17 competitors in this year’s event. This video of his crash is nuts. He’s wearing a GoPro on his helmet and you really get a sense of just how big of a gap he was attempting to jump while nearing the end of his run:

And another brutal wipeout from Gee Atherton in practice:

I’m not sure I’ve ever been able to feel a crash like that before while watching a video on YouTube. Maybe it’s because I’ve been out there for the event and watched those riders crash up close but that video made my stomach lurch.

Biggest Jumps, Transfers, and Airs at the 2023 Rampage

For some more highlights from this year’s Rampage, we’ve got 8 minutes of the best jumps, airs, and transfers with a few crashes peppered in there for good measure.

Spanish rider Bienvenido Aguado Alba won 3 awards at this year’s Red Bull Rampage. He won the the Utah Sports Commission Best Trick Award, the T-Mobile People’s Choice Award and the Kelly McGarry Spirit Award for his 70+ foot front flip:

This was the first year that Red Bull used first-person view (FPV) drones to capture the action. These unique drones were able to capture an entirely new perspective of the riders bombing it down the mountain. And that can be seen on the full replay below.

Also, I failed to mention above how this all works. Each of the 17 competitors has a team of two friends. That crew of three then shows up a week early out to Virgin, utah and is tasked with helping the competitor find his line down the mountain and building out the biker’s run using shovels (no power tools). This means building out the jumps and mapping the ideal route for the competitor to maximize his score.

The actual physical location of the Red Bull Rampage moves for each event over and over to other parts of the mesas available. This ensures the lines stay fresh for every competition and veteran riders can’t repeat their lines from years past.
