A young child in Alabama will one day look back on its baby race performance with deep regret after an epic collapse of allowed a competitor to come from behind and win it at the line. What started as an excruciatingly boring blowout at halftime of a college basketball game in Tuscaloosa quickly became one of the most electric moments of the year.

Unfortunately, the exhilarating finish came at the expense of the early favorite. He or she (I cannot tell) choked it away.

For those who are just now being introduced to the concept of a “baby race,” it is really as simple as it sounds. A group of infants and one of their parents line up on the baseline of a basketball court. The other parent lines up at the half-court line. Whichever child crawls its way from one parent to the other in the quickest amount of time is declared as the winner. I don’t know when or where this tradition began, but it has become one of the best forms of halftime entertainment.

10,000 Florida fans went absolutely bonkers for Hank the Tank’s dominant victory over other baby Gators last season. Saturday’s race in Tuscaloosa was equally as big of a blowout — until it wasn’t.

A baby, either named Andy or Annie was out to a monster lead. He or she was going to win by at least 30 feet. (I cannot figure out if it is a boy or a girl and the PA announcer’s call could go either way. Is there a D in his name? Or is it a she? I don’t know!)

Regardless of his or her name, the race was not even close. Some of the babies never even made it off of the baseline.

However, in a shocking turn of events, Andy/Annie decided to turn around and crawl back the other way. Oh no!

The surprising decision to reverse course opened the door for Reagan, who was slowly working her way down the sideline right in front of the bench. She saw the opportunity and turned on the jets.

As Andy/Annie crawled the wrong way, Reagan left her competition in the dust to pull out the come-from-behind win in the Alabama baby race. Nobody else was within 15 feet.

Although we should not discredit Reagan’s resilience, Andy/Annie totally blew it. He or she (I still have no idea) couldn’t handle the pressure.
