High Point basketball coach Alan Huss is reportedly leaving the program after two seasons. He led the Panthers to a 56-15 overall record in his time on campus, resulting in a pair of conference championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
He’s opted to accept a demotion, albeit one with an interesting caveat that secures his coaching future. Huss is headed to his alma mater, Creighton, where he’ll be an assistant on Greg McDermott’ staff.
While the initial move appears a bit head scratching without context, it’s one that will kickstart his career with a major program. Creighton is a Big East affiliate that’s been to five straight Big Dances. That includes a pair of Sweet 16s and an Elite Eight appearance.
McDermott has been roaming the sidelines since 2010. He’s led the Bluejays to incredible heights. With that being said, there are questions surrounding his future.
Matt Norlander of CBS Sports suggested that the coach had no more than two seasons left in his tank. He believes retirement is close. Alan Huss’s new job comes with the title of “coach in-waiting.” He will be Greg McDermott’s replacement when the time comes.
High Point coach Alan Huss is leaving to return to Creighton as the lead assistant under Greg McDermott, sources told CBS Sports. The sides have been in talks for weeks. Huss will be named the coach-in-waiting; McDermott expected to be there for no more than two more seasons.

Alan Huss leaves behind four new recruits.
While the move should prove beneficial in the coach’s long-term career goals, he does leave a program behind at High Point. He’d been in the process of rebuilding his roster ahead of 2025-26 before the news was announced.
The Panthers had landed four new transfer commitments over the last two weeks. Now, they’ll be suiting up for another coach after pledging to play for a new school.
Those commits are Scotty Washington (Cal State Northridge), Cam’Ron Fletcher (Xavier), Rob Martin (SEMO), and Jaydon Young (Virginia Tech).

Reports claim that Alan Huss had been in communication with Creighton for weeks. If true, he might’ve informed players and coaches of the situation at hand.
High Point will now have to find a coach to lead its new additions on the court in 2025-26. It will be interesting to see if there are any second thoughts about those transfer decisions. Alan Huss, meanwhile, is headed to Omaha as an assistant before becoming a head coach once again.
