Rhode Island Coach Archie Miller Under Fire For Almost Blocking Opponent’s Shot

Archie Miller was once one of the hottest coaching prospects in all of college basketball.

He led the Dayton Flyers to the Elite Eight in 2014, the first of four consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament for Miller and Flyers before leaving to become the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers.

After four difficult years with the Hoosiers, Miller landed with the University of Rhode Island, where he and the Rams squared off with the Flyers on Saturday.

Unfortunately for Miller, he made headlines for all the wrong reasons. For one, Dayton rolled to a 96-62 to victory to remain atop the Atlantic 10. But it was one specific play that has Miller in hot water.

Mid-way through the first half, with Dayton leading 19-7, the Flyers pushed the ball up the court on a fast break in attempt to get an open 3.

Instead, Miller went well out of the designated coaches box and found himself almost in the lap of the Dayton player, who had to pull the ball back out rather than shoot.

Somehow, Miller was not assessed a technical foul despite nearly blocking the shot.

How is this not a T? We need to give coaches collars and zap them when they leave the coaching box,” Dana O’Neil of The Athletic asked.

“Mentioned this before but we’re going to see a coach injure a player. Has to start being an auto-ejection. Just like if a player left the bench,” Twitter user Jordan Majewski said.

How are coaches not suspended for this crap,” asked another fan.

Miller has had a rough go of things since leaving Dayton. He went just 67-58 in four years in Bloomington. Now he’s just 18-31 with Rhode Island.

So you can’t blame him for trying to take matters into his own time. But you still gotta stay within the rules.
