Art Briles had seemingly made it back to the college football ranks after last week’s hiring at Grambling State University. The former Baylor head coach was primed to be the Tigers’ next offensive coordinator, joining staff with Hue Jackson in Louisiana.
Unfortunately, that stint as OC didn’t last long.
News broke Monday that Briles would be resigning from his post just days after the initial hire amid immediate backlash from fans and media.

For those who’ve forgotten, Briles coached at Baylor between 2008 and 2015, winning 10 or more games on four separate occasions. He once led the Baylor Bears to three consecutive top 15 finishes. Over his eight seasons in the Big XII, the Bears won 65 games, climbing as high as No. 2 in the AP Poll in 2015.
That 2015 season would be Briles’s last, however, after a school-wide sex scandal made national headlines. Under the head coach’s reign, there were found to be multiple cover ups surrounding Baylor football players and alleged sexual assaults on campus.
Unsurprisingly, Briles was fired.
Those feelings of disdain from the college football world have not subsided as referenced by his immediate resignation at Grambling State.
Not many believed that this hire was a great idea from the get-go, so there was an obvious response of “told-you-so” commentary coming from members of the media following Monday’s news.
I mean, hiring a man that helped silence the voices of sexual abuse victims for the better of a football program isn’t something that people are just going to brush under the rug. And putting him back in a similar position of power doesn’t seem like the smartest of moves.
Who could’ve possibly seen it coming?

I wonder when people will realize it’ll never be a good idea to hire Art Briles?
On behalf of this survivor, thank you to everyone who keeps the pressure on. In the world of sports and sexual violence – we don’t see a lot of wins, but this counts as one. #SetTheExpectation https://t.co/aQ825JEq6V

So the whole news drop that you were hiring someone who covered up and contributed to a massive sex scandal right at the start of a global war didn’t work out? https://t.co/kRA3dVuVNu
