Chargers running back Austin Ekeler expressed his frustration over the salary disparity between running backs and other positions in the NFL.

Ekeler, who was granted permission to seek a trade during the offseason but ultimately stayed with the Chargers, believes that backup wide receivers are earning more than he is, despite being a starting running back.

During an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, Ekeler voiced his concerns about the running back market and the lack of significant contracts for players at his position.

He pointed out that backup wide receivers, who hold lesser roles on their respective teams, are earning higher salaries than him. As the starter and a player who has a greater impact on the game, Ekeler believes that he should be compensated accordingly.

“If I’m looking at some of the backup receivers out here that are still making more than me, that’s going to p— me off, right?” Ekeler added: “I’m a little bit like, wait a minute, so you’re telling me these people are the number three receivers and they’re going to make more than me? And I’m the starter? I get more carries, I touch the ball more, I have more of an impact.”

Ekeler emphasized that his issue is not solely about money but about the principle of adding value to a team. He feels that his contributions, such as carrying the ball more often and having a greater impact on the game, warrant a higher salary.

Ekeler expressed his determination to fight for fair compensation based on the value he brings to the Chargers.
