  • The New England Patriots are currently without an offensive coordinator.
  • Head coach Bill Belichick was asked for an update on the search this week.
  • Even for the famously curt coach, his answer was quite strange.

Growing up as a New York Jets fan, it’s fair to say that Bill Belichick is not my favorite NFL figure of all time, to say the least.

Still, back when he and Brady were dominating the NFL for the majority of my life, it was Brady who received the brunt of my disgust, likely due to the fact that he was the handsome, model-marrying face of the New England Patriots’ success. Now, while I still certainly held a grudge towards Belichick — who wouldn’t? — it paled in comparison to the feelings I had about Brady.

Since Brady left, though, what’s happened to Billy B has been quite fascinating, as the undoubted greatest coach of all time is not only trailing Tom Brady in terms of Super Bowl titles without the other but he’s also ceded control of the AFC East to the Buffalo Bills, who are now among the best teams in football.

While the Pats did return to the postseason last year with rookie Mac Jones as their quarterback, no one was particularly convinced that the team would make all that deep of a run, which is exactly what happened when they were ultimately bounced out of the playoffs by the aforementioned Bills.

Bill Belichick provides curt update on the team’s search for an offensive coordinator

Heading into year three without the services of TB12, Belichick now finds himself in a position where he needs to get the franchise back to its old ways before the debate about who was more responsible for the Patriots’ dynasty swings more heavily in Brady’s favor. This latest quote about the team’s nonexistent offensive coordinator, though, would certainly have me wondering if the 70-year-old NFL legend still has the same mojo as he used to.

Yes, I get that it’s still relatively early in the NFL calendar, as training camp isn’t set to begin for another 10 weeks or so. And yes, I understand that Bill Belichick, of literally all people in the NFL, deserves the benefit of the doubt. But still, to see him have such a laissez-faire attitude about one of his team’s top three most important coaching positions just seems odd, especially compared to the utterly genius preparation he’s long been known for. Perhaps he’s grooming his mulleted son Steve for the job.

Or, maybe Belichick has the NFL world exactly where he wants it: doubting him.
