San Francisco Quarterback Brock Purdy Wants Another 49er To Win MVP

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has had an MVP-caliber season in the eyes of many. But, he thinks another San Francisco 49er should be the MVP.

Brock Purdy endorsed running back Christian McCaffrey for the award following another fantastic offensive performance in the team’s 45-29 win over the Arizona Cardinals.

But, as of Sunday evening, it was Brock Purdy himself who had an overwhelming lead in the MVP race if betting odds are to be believed. He’s sitting at around -200 at most sports books after his Sunday performance.

No doubt, it was a great performance. The second-year player was 16-25 for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Games like that have been the norm for Purdy this year. On the year he’s completing 69.4% of his passes for 3,795 yards and 29 touchdowns against 7 interceptions. Those are great numbers in a year when there isn’t a quarterback putting up insane numbers anywhere in the league.

But, I’m not sure how anyone can view Brock Purdy as the MVP. He has had a great year, absolutely. But, when left tackle Trent Williams, wide receiver Deebo Saumel, and McCaffrey were battling injuries in the middle of the season, the 49ers offense sputtered. They scored seventeen points in three straight losses as Purdy threw more interceptions than touchdowns.

Doesn’t that prove that those guys are more valuable than Purdy? It’s not like he was short on weapons. McCaffrey, though hobbled, still played, and George Kittle and Brandon Aiyuk produced great options in the passing game.

In my opinion, the case for Christian McCaffrey is much stronger. When he’s been healthy, the team has been unstoppable.

McCaffrey is well out in front in the NFL rushing title race with 1,292 yards. Plus, he’s added 57 catches for 58 yards, and has 20 total touchdowns. He opens up so much in that offense, and when he was acquired last year from the Panthers the offense really took off.

Unfortunately, I think MVP voters are unlikely to give the award to a non-quarterback. Right now, whether he wants to be or not, Purdy is certainly in the driver’s seat.
